What Is a Crypto Referral Code, and How Does It Work?

If you have signed up for a crypto exchange, you have probably seen a box asking for a referral code or invite code. It is easy to skip, but that small field decides whether you pay full trading fees forever or get part of every fee back. This guide explains what a referral code is, what it does, how to enter it, and why a real one never costs you anything.

What a referral code actually is

A referral code is a short string of letters and numbers that an exchange ties to a partner account. When you enter it during sign up, the exchange knows you arrived through that partner and links your new account to them for as long as it exists.

The exchange then shares part of the trading fees you pay with that partner as a commission. A good partner passes most of that commission back to you as cashback, so the code is really a switch that turns on a lasting discount on your fees.

What you actually get for using one

Without a code, you pay the exchange standard trading fee on every order, and none of it comes back. With a valid code applied, a fixed share of each fee is returned to your account automatically, on every trade, not only the first one.

The rate depends on the exchange and the partner. It applies to fees you were going to pay anyway, so it is pure saving. Over months of trading it adds up to real money, especially if you trade often.

How to enter a referral code

The easiest way is to open the exchange through a partner link that already has the code attached. The field fills in by itself, so there is nothing to type and nothing to forget.

If you sign up without a link, look for the Referral code, Invite code, or Referral ID box on the registration screen and paste the code there before you finish. On most exchanges the code can only be entered once, at sign up, and cannot be changed later, so it is worth getting right the first time.

Referral code, invite code, and affiliate link

These names point to the same thing. Referral code and invite code are the text you type, while an affiliate link or referral link is a web address with that code already built in. Clicking the link and typing the code lead to the same result: your account is connected to the partner.

Different exchanges use different words for it, and in some markets people use local terms for the cashback it unlocks. Whatever it is called, the function is identical.

Is using a referral code safe

Yes, when the partner is an official affiliate of the exchange. You still register directly on the exchange and complete its verification yourself, so your funds and your account always stay on the exchange. The partner never touches your money or your login.

The one thing to avoid is creating a second account to refer yourself. Exchanges forbid self referral and can suspend accounts for it. Going through a legitimate partner link is the allowed, safe way to get the same fee savings without that risk.

Sign up with the code already applied

Open an exchange through one of these partners and the referral code is attached automatically, so part of every trading fee comes back to you from day one.

Frequently asked questions

Does a referral code cost me anything?
No. You pay the exchange standard trading fee either way. The code simply returns part of that fee to you, so it is a saving, never an extra charge.
Can I add a referral code after I sign up?
Usually not. Most exchanges only accept a referral or invite code during registration and lock it afterward. If you already have an account without a code, that account normally cannot be linked later, so use a code on any new sign up.
What is the difference between a referral code and a referral link?
A referral code is the text you type into the sign up form. A referral link is a web address with that code already built in, so clicking it applies the code for you. Both connect your account to the same partner.
